Ialyssos — also spelled Ialysos — is one of the three ancient city-states of Rhodes, founded by the Dorian Greeks over three thousand years ago. Today the modern resort sits on the west coast just 8 km from Rhodes Diagoras Airport, making it the closest major resort area on the island. It combines a laid-back beachfront atmosphere with deep historical roots and some of the best windsurfing conditions in the Mediterranean.

Rising directly above the resort is the forested hill of Filerimos, one of the most significant historical and spiritual sites on Rhodes. The summit is crowned by a Byzantine monastery dedicated to Our Lady of Filerimos, built on the foundations of a 5th-century basilica, which itself was constructed over the ruins of an ancient Greek temple to Athena Polias. The grounds contain the excavated remains of the ancient Acropolis of Ialyssos, a Doric fountain, and medieval frescoes. A dramatic Way of the Cross — a cypress-lined avenue with life-size bronze stations — leads to a cruciform chapel at the headland, offering panoramic views across the Aegean to Turkey. Peacocks wander freely through the grounds, making it one of the most memorable excursions on the island.

Accommodation in Ialyssos ranges from family-friendly all-inclusive beach hotels and mid-range properties to self-catering apartments and private villas. The resort is particularly popular with British, German, and Scandinavian families who return season after season for the combination of reliable sunshine, excellent water sports, and affordable pricing. The village centre has a good selection of tavernas, bakeries, and mini-markets, giving the area a more authentically Greek atmosphere than the luxury resort strip further north at neighbouring Ixia.

Ialyssos is also exceptionally well-positioned for day trips. Rhodes Town's medieval Old Town is just 10 km north, Lindos is 55 km south, and the Valley of the Butterflies 25 km south — all convenient half-day excursions from an Ialyssos base.
